LETTER 1

Aloha,

We the people of Maui are ready for our leaders to put us first. We need someone who is a servant of the people, unwavering in their commitment for freedom and truth. "The true measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." -- Martin Luther King

We need people with a strong sense of unity and respect for traditions. An elected person is never above the people but humbly below the people for whom they serve. To serve is an honor, to gain the public trust a responsibility to always stand up for what is true for what is pono. In this world there are no guaranties and what we gain is of little value if we don't have love for one another.

Our legacy is our greatest gift if we live our lives not for self but as an example of what we as humans can achieve by being selfless and giving back much more than we have been blessed with. Working together as a team is like a room full of instruments, some may excel alone but none can match the symphonic sound made when all are playing together. We need people who will be diligent to listen and learn than apply truth in every situation no matter what.

I believe in reinstating the values that made our nation great, we need to care for our most vulnerable citizens like our keiki, the elderly, the disabled, and our veterans. Truly the number one concern for any generation is to leave this world in a better place than when we were here. Instead, our country is 13 trillion dollars in debt because our government will not govern within its means. Is that what we want to leave our keiki. Studies show the fall of great civilizations all started with moral decline. Does Hawaii want to be the leader of homosexual marriage? A wise man once said, "Only morality in our actions can give beauty and dignity to our life." -- Albert Einstein

In conclusion if we the people will humble ourselves before God and pray for forgiveness, we may ask God to heal our ohana, our 'aina, and God will be faithful.

LETTER 2

Aloha Friends,

I have seen our country and state on a downward spiral long enough. I want to change direction by returning to the values that made our country great. We can start right here in Maui, and become a beacon of hope and light in this dark and cluttered world. To start we need to care for our most vulnerable citizens, our kekei, elderly, disabled, and our veterans. They shouldn't be asked to make the greatest sacrifices. Our teachers and public safety workers are over-worked and under-paid. We can use Federal resources to modernize standers and systems. The Federal Recovery Act will bring 1.4 Billion to Hawaii which we can use to change some of the injustices.

We need to put Hawaii back to work, retaining jobs of critical importance. Speaking of critical importance we still don't have a west side hospital. I will push for medical liability reform which will help stabilize malpractice premiums, which is a major cause of our physician shortage. In Hawaii physicians cannot pass this increased cost on to their patients, this has caused physicians to retire early eliminate high risk procedures from their practice and move away from Hawaii. We need comprehensive tort reform to be able to recruit physicians and allow physicians to charge a fair rate for services than negotiate directly with the insurance companies on an independent and individual basis.

Education Reform, "Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one." -- Malcolm Forbes

The greatest waste of our natural resources is the number of people who never achieve their potential. There is a tremendous potential within each of us waiting to be released. We must step up. We need to decentralize authority to our local schools. Eliminate cap on charter schools. Expand {STEM} education, reading, writing, math, and science. We should increase the budget for our schools. We pay $40,000 annually to incarcerate a prisoner and $10,000 for each school child. We would have less prisoners if it were the other way around.

The time has come for renewal of ecological/sustainable agriculture to allow healthy food and farming. My vision for an ecological/sustainable form of agriculture is based on statewide support for family farms growing diverse crops. This system will create food security, and sovereignty for our islands. We need to keep our best agricultural lands zoned for agriculture and continue to develop water infrastructure. Our institutions can develop educational programs that will train people to farm organic in the tropics. Our farms can recycle organic waste which will increase soil health and form profitability. We need non-toxic solutions to pest control. We can assist communities with knowledge for developing community and home gardens. Our Rural Economic Development Boards can support direct marketing of agricultural products such as farmers markets and community-supported agriculture (CSA). Schools can help produce fresh produce from local farms. Supermarkets can buy local produce and restaurants can feature fresh foods from are farms for us all. We can assist farmers to procure small grants for value-added processing machinery.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of sustainable food movement is how quickly a community can create a local food economy. We must grow valuable high-end tropical fruits, nuts, vegetables, and flowers for specialty markets. We can feed our families and our communities. We must protect our soils, plants, and animals that form the delicate balance of our pristine ecosystem. We must protect our priceless living treasure we call home. It is time to move Hawaii to the forefront of the green age by becoming a world model for clean energy and ecologically-sustainable agriculture.

LETTER 3

Aloha Friends,

My name is Chayne Marten. You might remember that I ran for Maui County Council. Although not elected at that time I've still found a way to help Maui during these turbulent times.

I have begun assembling a team of individuals to become part of the Maui Green Team. Each member will contribute ideas or share valuable information that will create a wave of energy and commitment toward clean energy and sustainability. These individuals will come from all segments of our society. It's important to develop a strong network to include political and private industry. Therefore I am inviting industry and business leaders, entrepreneurs, hotel representatives, and our community leaders to come together as a team. Together we can work out our common challenges.

Our goal is to be accountable to our constituents and to offer hope, not frustration, as the key to success. Cooperation, not competition, increases performance levels and empowers and enriches our lives. We will come up with solutions that will save jobs, create new jobs and grow our economy. Teaching others by example to become greener, sustainable and energy efficient. Our Mantra is to reduce, reuse, recycle and never stop learning. It is important that we can leave behind a living legacy. No doubt few things are as important as protecting our natural resources and reducing our carbon footprint for our future generations. Remember our future hangs on every day that passes.

Now is the time to begin charting a new course and riding the tide of change. We cannot start too soon, because you never know how soon it will be too late! I believe Hawaii could become the first clean energy state. Our hopes and determination will propel us forward. A winning team is one where everyone contributes and shares in the same vision, and although made up of several individuals acts as one unit with one purpose. There are many teams out there, but few rise to the top, the winners are not individuals looking for self glory but rather sacrificing for the team to achieve a team goal.

Coming together is the formula for success. Together we will inspire each other to reach higher. I believe meaningful work, caring for others, finding the beauty that we all have within us, and striving to serve others first, provides the impetus for becoming all we can become. Hawaii will be the model for the rest of our country and the world as we release our dependence on oil, and expand sustainable agriculture becoming totally sustainable. By supporting our cause you become part of the World Green Team. We are currently working with our hotels, airport, hospital and others.

Mahalo for your time, we hope we can count on your support as we strive to bring Hawaii to the forefront of the green age.

Mahalo,

LETTER 4

Aloha Friends,

Perhaps nothing is more powerful than peace, peace of mind and spirit. We know both peace and freedom come at a high price. There is a time when we must give up peace and fight. There are circumstances when theirs nothing more important then to stand up for your rights, beliefs, and values. there is also a time to be bold and speak truth not fearing the consequences, however there is a price to pay when you stand up for what is right when the wrong is in the majority. Our Government needs to answer to the people not special interest, were tired of unkept political promises. Why do our politicians spend more money to get elected then what they will earn in their office? what does that tell us? Shouldn't that excess campaign money go to better use like our food bank. Our people are struggling to make ends meat while politicians spend what ever it takes to return to office.Do you think the incumbent will agree to campaign spending limits? not likely I believe all monies donated to a campaign that are not used during the campaign should be returned to the maker not kept by the candidate. When elected I will fight for both campaign spending limits and term limits, no more than two terms.
I have always believed in a free society where we elect our Government the process should be fair and just to one and all. To make it fair for all and not just the privileged we must have campaign spending limits and term limits . that in itself would reduce much of the corruption that exists today. Politicians don't want it but a fair honest and just person would welcome this kind of change.
I have seen our Government and economy on a downward slide long enough. I am concerned about the future of our islands, and what will become of all our kekei if we do not step up and fight for change. Our small businesses are hurting shouldn't Government look at the relationship with small business as a marriage. If Government would help and partner together with small business by reducing taxes, and red tape, road blocks and per mote small business than both Government and small business would both thrive.
Today people all around me are suffering, discouraged and many have given up hope that anything will ever change for the better. We ask our Government to change and put the people first, the truth is our Government will not change until we do. I recall durning the last election it seemed everyone was asking for change, yet every incumbent running for office was re-elected to office and things got much worse. We will not have change until we elect different representatives.
I have found that politicians do not listen to one person except at election time, but when one person is backed up by the thousands of individual people then a movement is created, along with a voice that cannot be ignored. By our self we are powerless to change things, but together we become a unstoppable force that can change our Government for the better.
Fighting for our rights is an ongoing battle I am willing to wage with your help. The problems we face are big but are determination is larger. We can make a difference but we must do more than the average person who will do nothing. A large number of our citizens have lived here for years and haven't bothered to register to vote. And unfortunately many of our young adults would rather watch American Idol or Americas got talent. Young adults need to be aware it is their future at stake. Yes America has talent but it also has big problems. It is important to know what is going on with the representatives that will dictate our every way of life, and not just who advances in TV showes. Don't spend hours watching soap operas just watch Council it has more drama and it's reality TV. I ask you young voters remember Americans are dying everyday to protect your right to choose our Government, you honor these brave service men and women by voting. Many are saying this is the most important election in Hawaii history. It is important never to give up hope. A wise person wrote " As long as a person has hope no situation is hopeless. Hope revives ideals, renews dreams, revitalizes visions, Hope scales the peak, wrestles with the impossible achieves the highest aim. Hope lights candles in despairing hearts, hope rouses life to continue, to expand and grow to reach out, and go on." We will always have challenges it is how we deal with them that makes the difference. A band aid approach only prolongs the problem we must get to the root of the problem in order to solve it.
I see these concerns as a challenge, Let me list a few concerns
Poor state of our economy, state budget cuts, loss of jobs, furlough Fridays
Lack of a west side hospital, shortage of health care professionals
Kupuna care kekei care disabled and veteran care
High cost of food, transportation, medical care and affordable housing
Low confidence and low performance in our public schools
Homelessness and helplessness as many have lost their jobs
Need of infrastructure and road repairs
medical tort reform needed now
Maui imports over 90% of our food we need ecological sustainable agriculture
Abuse and misuse of of enviorment, injection wells killing our reefs sewage and garbage in our ocean
Increase adult and Juvenal crime, speeders and red light runners make our streets and communities unsafe
Prison over crowing, we spend $40k a year per prisoner and only $10k per school child reverse it and we would have less prisoners.
school reform
I believe the number one concern for all of Hawaii is our economy, loss of jobs and budget cuts. We can help the situation by embracing clean energy. Clean energy will create thousands of jobs, we must stand up to big oil and support industries that will employ people without destroying the economy and the enviorment. We need to expand ecological sustainable agriculture. We must always be looking for new and innovative ways to protect and preserve our living treasure and our ocean that cradles our islands. The oil industry has impeded our progress for too long it is time to stand up to the oil industry and move Hawaii beyond its dependence on oil. I have taken an oath to preserve and protect the Constitution of the United States Of America and I promise to preserve and protect our Kuleana which encompasses both the rights and corresponding sacred responsibility and accountability, to maintain, conserve, and protect the Akua, the 'aina and the kenaka in perpetuity.
I believe what makes Government work is a willingness to reach across party lines for the good of the people. A person could have great ideas but if your like an oak tree unwilling to bend it will be difficult to get anything done. It is important to know when to stand firm and when to bend. Both republicans and Democrats have some strong leaders and both parties have members that should not be in Government. No party is perfect. I am the link that will bring the parties together it is time to build bridges and reconnect the people with our Government. Our job is to make life better, and easier and rebuild the public trust. Government is made up of many parties but we add up to one people united. We must set a course we can all be proud of.
I can help those who are willing to help themselves, If you will stand up for me on election day I Will stand up for you every day of my 712 day term. I have been campaigning door to door listening to you and learning from you, now I am ready to lead you as your representative. In conclusion a good friend of mine warned me not to mention God while running for office. Although I will not preach to you. I will not deny God who is the source of my strength. The bottom line is I want my 9 year old triplets to see daddy step out of my comfort zone and stand up and fight for all of us. Because someday when I come to the end of my road, and when I face my maker I would like to hear these words Well done my good and faithful servent.
Mahalo for your support

LETTER 5

Aloha Friends,

I believe health care decisions should be made by the patient, their family and their physicians not Bureaucrats in Washington. We don't want Physicians being agents of the state. People want quality health care and they want the system to be affordable to them personally and to the nation as a whole. High cost and inability to pay prevent too many of us from obtaining health care.Federal Bureaucrats think they can solve complex medical problems by blue ribbon panels. Although supported by some the notion of guidelines has won universal approval among practicing clinicians who are apprehensive and suspicious that Federal treatment protocols will bind medical practitioners to treat medical beneficiaries with particular ailments in a certain way or mandate justification for deviating from Government set standers. The concept behind a guidelines is simplistic and denies the critical value of the physicians judgement.
Federal guidelines in the beginning will be no more than recommendations. Standers will eventually become requirements and will be regarded by Government as directives to physicians. Any deviation from such standers will probably be assumed incorrect. Government benchmarks for medicalĀ  care may be a partial solution to huge budget deficits, but there is a real danger that restrictive guidelines may cripple physicians efforts to provide care for the elderly and others unfortunate enough to have a complicated illness. Standers assume that once a patient has an affliction, the diagnoses and the treatment always follow. Logically if this were really the case, we could replace skilled clinicians with technicians. Any practicing physician knows that medicine is an art steeped in uncertainty, and patients with the same ailment differ in both their presentation and their response to therapy. The Obama administration may be operating under Utopian delusion that patients can be treated in a cookbook fashion. But no Government computer however detailed, can possibly dictate exactly what should be done for each individual patient.

LETTER 6

Aloha Friends,

Politicians scurry around the subject of Genetically Modified Organisms, It is however an important topic and I will address it. All life is sacred, all that lives is intricately connected with each life form, having its own integrity. The whole is mysteriously more the sum of its parts. The genetic engineering of foods by cooperations is extremely harmful to our ecosystem. To release genetically modified organisms [GMOs] into the wild threatens food chains, human health and the environment. Animal bacteria and virus genes being inserted into plants offends a sense of Divine design, why does man think they can improve Gods design? Corporations care about profits not people, GMO research should be rejected on various grounds, including ethics. Corporations should be committed to maintain the integrity of different species rather than attempt to modify, control, and dominate them for profit. GMOs ability to harm human, animal and plant life is a quantum leap greater than most technologies and does not have room for mistakes. Flaws cannot be recalled and fixed but will become the negitive heritage to countless future generations. In a free society we should be able to say no to GMO research in Hawaii. More GMO research is done in Hawaii than anywhere else in our country. I believe GMO products should be labled as such, unfortunately that isn't the case. If we could look into a crystal ball and see the long term effects of these products I believe we would put a stop to it now. Many countries label GMO products, and many more countries outlaw GMO products altogether. Hawaiians don't want their lands contaminated, I promise to preserve and protect our Kuleana which encompasses both the rights and corresponding sacred responsibility and accountability, to protect the Akua, the 'aina and Kenaka in perpetuity to the best of my ability

I would like to say Mahalo to both you and the Lahaina News for your questions.

Chayne Marten 57

Occupation:
Maui Green Team founder. Green Consultant

Education:
Canada College, Bethany Bible College, Standford University, Actors Conservatory San Francisco, Screen Actors Guild Conservatory.

Community involvement:
Odd Fellows, organization to help children in need, Volunteer kicking coach Lahaina High School.

Political experience:
None

1) Why am I running?
I am running for State House to offer the right kind of change, our government and our economy have been on a downward spiral long enough. I am concerned about the future of our islands and what will become of our kekeis if we do not stand up and fight for change. I waited to see who was going to stand up for the christian values we believe in. No one was willing to run for West Maui to defend our core principles such as God, family, community, and a bright future for our kekei. I have a strong sense of unity and respect for traditions. I will be diligent to listen, learn and I promise never to raise taxes or fees. I will stand against any force that would mortgage our kekeis future. It is time to reverse direction and take the path to sustainability. I will be part of a team that will push for term limits, campaign spending limits and government transparency. I am a new breed of statesmen that will put the people first, and model what a representative should be.

2) Biggest issues:
A) Economy I believe the number one concern is the economy, loss of jobs is a bi product as is budget cuts, We can help the situation by embracing clean energy. Clean energy will create thousands of jobs, but we must stand up to big oil and support industries that will employ people without destroying the economy and the environment. If we are to move forward we have to lessen our dependency on oil, tourism and imports. As Hawaii begins its journey toward clean energy, and ecological sustainable agriculture, along with diversification and entrepreneurial opportunities create thousands of jobs and no longer will we import 95% of our food, instead we will become exporters of exotic fruits, vegetables, nuts, and flowers we can sell to speciality markets. The time has come for renewal of ecological sustainable form of agriculture to allow healthy food and families. My vision for an ecological sustainable form og agriculture is based on statewide support for family farms growing diverse crops. This system will create food security, and sovereighty for our islands. We need to keep our best agricultural lands zoned for agriculture and continue to develop water infrastructure. Our institutions can develop educational programs that will train people to farm organic in the tropics. Our farms can recycle organic waste which will increase soil health and form profitability. We need healthy solutions for pest control, and we can assist communities with knowledge for developing community and home gardens. Our rural economic development board can support direct marketing of agricultural products to farmers markets and local restaurants. It is time to move Hawaii to the forefront of the green age and become the model for clean energy and ecological sustainable agriculture
B) School Reform Eliminate the cap on charter schools, expand (STEM) education. Science, Technology, engineering, and math. Decentralize bureaucracy and mandate 90% of funding to reach the class room. Teachers should be compensated based on performance as teachers, not by tenure. WE must have teachers that have high standers and are qualified to teach kekei with special needs. It is important to know what is going on in the classroom and on the school yard. Above all our schools need to be safe for both our kekei and our teachers. Our State has not taken advantage of millions of dollars in Federal funds for safe routes to school program to provide critical infrastructure improvements around schools so that kekei have safe ways to school. Shouldn't government facilitate the safe routes to school program and use these funds. I would like to see seat belts on school buses. We must continue to think both inside and outside the box for creative ideas.
C) Tort Reform West Maui needs a hospital and air ambulance, Maui Memorial doesn't have to feel threatened because they can partner and work together. the bigger problem could be a hospital but no doctors. Hawaii already has the fewest doctors in the nation per ca pita. We need patient-centered health care reform, unfortunately the new health care law fails to adequately address physicians most pressing concerns, including tort reform by far the biggest reform needed to bring down health care costs and the need for a permanent fix. We must not take the decision making power out of the hands of physicians and patients and turning it over to government bureaucrats. They remain more committed to gaining additional power under the umbrella of government than on focusing on solutions that will reduce health care costs and lessen the burden on physicians. Recent polls indicate 46.3% of primary care physicians say the new health care law will either force them out of medicine or make them want to leave their profession. The new health care plan not only fails to address key problems that contribute to soaring health care cost it ignores the factors forcing doctors to leave their profession, including billing inefficiencies, malpractice insurance costs, rising graduate and medical expenses and mountains of paper work. As a result of outrageous new mandates on physicians and falling reimbursement rates under Medicare, higher operating costs will force many doctors to sell their practice to local hospitals an alarming trend that is spiking across the country. The public needs to know that these actions will have devastating consequences on the quality of medical care they're used to receiving including less patient choices and longer wait times for routine appointments. Already health care experts are sounding the alarm about the negative effects of this new law, pointing to the worsening shortage of primary care physicians, the very doctors who will be tasked with overseeing care for the thirty million newly insured. The solution is simple but because our legislature is dominated by lawyers we have a problem, they will not pass this kind of legislation because high liability judgements, means allot of money for trial lawyers. This is what I mean by special interests. Even though this is what the people want, I will always put the peoples best interest first. If we are not going to be there to support doctors, don't expect doctors to be there for us.

3) Primary needs:
Hospital and air ambulance is needed now we have a large population and many West Side tourists, we also have a large senior population. We cannot put them at risk, life is to precious to put this concern on the back burner. Another major concern is are small business that are the backbone of our economy we must help them now by reducing taxes for both small business and families. I would like to see government partner with small business by reducing roadblocks on their path to progress. Government should take the first step and help promote small business and prove they are willing and able to help. Need more and better schools that are out of harms way. We must find a solution for our homeless. Preserve and protect Honolua Bay.

4) How can state government bolster the economy, create jobs and support small business?
Our state can bolster the economy by embracing clean energy and diversification. We should expand ecological sustainable agriculture. which will bring thousands of jobs to Hawaii, and lower taxes for small business. Shortcut the waiting process to achieve set goals and promote small business. We can also use special funds to make sure we keep jobs of critical importance, until we become more sustainable at which time we will begin putting funds back into the kitty.

5) How can the state do a better job supporting its public schools?
I think it is a little late to be asking that question now. The state has failed miserably it is time to change to local school control. We want quality education for all our kekei including those kekei with disabilities.

6) What talents or insights would I bring to the Hawaii Legislature?
It is important that a legislator be able to sell his ideas to his colleagues and remember every legislator is there for a purpose, never make enemies instead build alliances. It is important to know when to bend and when to stand firm, I have always admired those who stand firm even when it is not politically correct but knowing it is the right thing to do. We must work with the Democratic leadership which is the majority in our government. By building bridges of common concerns, working together as a team, forming strong bonds and making peace is what is truly important. We must rekindle a conservative fiscal responsibility and require government to live under the same constraints as our families and our businesses. I will unite our parties to chart our future and a course we can all be proud of.

7) Why should GOP voters chose me in September?
I will put Hawaii back to work and on a sustainable path by providing jobs, smaller government and hope. I will propose that we streamline government by forming an external oversight committee to go into every department of government looking for waste, duplication and practices that need to be improved for effectiveness and efficiency, rather than looking for what programs can withstand further cuts. why not look for money that is not being used for its highest purpose, lets not cut critical programs. I am a Reform candidate and I believe we can reduce our legislature by two thirds and do away with a part time legislature and go to a full time legislature having fewer legislative jobs w ith higher salaries would increase competition and give us better candidates while saving us tens of millions of tax payer dollars. We should have term limits no more than two terms, and campaign spending limits, this will help reduce corruption. I started the Maui green team to help our people, our motto is Honoring Our Heritage, Embracing Our Diversity, and Sharing Our Future. I am a family man married to my wife since college, we have three beautiful 9 year olds. If I can manage baby boot camp with triplets, I can handle anything.

8) Sound Off
My friends the truth is there are no easy answers. We must put everything on the table and set priorities. I have been campaigning door to door listening and learning. I am deeply concerned that so many of us are struggling to make ends meat. We need hope now, I have spent under $100.00 on my campaign so far I can't bring myself to ask for contributions at a time such as this. Therefore I haven't collected a single penny from anyone I may not have money , but I do have a hunger to serve you, and a strong sense of purpose, hope and compassion. I ask not for power instead I ask for prayer, I ask God for wisdom to lead our people. WE desperately need Gods guidance we cannot be overwhelmed by problems we see around us. Often we fail to pray because we fail to realize just how powerful prayer is . It can affect our circumstances, we are called to pray for those in authority. Faith allows us to pray effectively for our government. Remember by ourselves we are powerless to change things, but when one person is backed up by thousands of individual people than a movement is created, along with a voice that cannot be ignored. Together we become a unstoppable force that can change our government for the better. Fighting for our rights is an ongoing battle I am willing to wage with your help. We can make a difference but we must do more than the average person who will do nothing. I can help those who will help themselves, if you will stand up for me on election day ,I will stand up for you everyday of my 712 day term. I have been campaigning door to door listening to you and learning from you, now I am ready to represent you as your legislator.
